Pharmacological effects and mechanism of action

Hemorrhoids are one of the most common problems in today’s industrialized society, varying depending on the severity of the symptoms.

The factors that cause hemorrhoids are similar to those that cause varicose veins and depend largely on a person’s genetic arrangement. Excessive pressure on the veins during pregnancy, standing or sitting for long periods, putting extra pressure during defecation, and lifting heavy objects are considered to be the main factors that cause hemorrhoids.

Since the portal vein of the venous system does not have any valves, any factor that increases venous congestion in the area around the anal can interfere with hemorrhoids; factors such as abdominal pressure (Additional pressure during defecation, pregnancy, cough, sneezing, vomiting and some physical exercises), increased blood pressure of Portal system due to liver cirrhosis, standing and sitting for long periods, and so on. – The most important symptoms of hemorrhoids are itching, burning, pain, and irritation during defecation, inflammation, and swelling of the anus and the surrounding area seeing blood on the toilet paper or in the toilet and mucus excretion. – Tannins in the hamamelis plant have astringent effects.

These phenolic compounds, at lower concentrations, can seal cell membranes and reduce capillary permeability. – At higher concentrations, they cause protein deposition and thicken the colloidal tissue, resulting in a thick membrane in the affected area and ulcers, helping to regenerate damaged blood vessels. As skin proteins become stronger, the resistance to inflammation will also increase, and appropriate anti-inflammatory effects will be seen. – Another effect of the tannins of the Hamamelis plant is the vasoconstrictive and anticonvulsant effects of these compounds, which can facilitate blood circulation in the veins and help maintain the balance of venous & arterial blood flow.

In this way, they show good results in relieving varicose veins and diseases related to the vessel wall. With the use of these compounds, the volume of the protrusions in the anal area is reduced and the pain and heaviness are eliminated. They can also reduce congestion and blood clots in localized veins. Appropriate and proven clinical effects of hamamelis have also been observed in local anesthesia and pain relief.
